Tragic Wrong-Way Crash Claims Lives of Bernedine Spann and Two Children
The Huntsville, Alabama and surrounding communities are reeling from a devastating accident that claimed the lives of Bernedine Spann, 32, and two of her children, Ja’Leah Spann, 13, and Jaxton Spann, 7. The tragedy unfolded Wednesday night on U.S. 82 in Lee County, Georgia, when a vehicle traveling the wrong way collided head-on with the Spann family’s car.
According to the Georgia State Patrol, the wrong-way driver, 41-year-old Sherita Goddard, was suspected of driving under the influence. Authorities confirmed that Bernedine Spann and her daughter Ja’Leah died at the scene, while Jaxton Spann was transported to a nearby hospital. Despite efforts to save him, the young boy tragically passed away several days later. Their father, James Spann, shared his heartbreak publicly on social media, writing, “prayers prayers prayers as Jaxton Dontrez Spann transition over to be with his mom and sister.”
Bernedine Spann was remembered as a devoted and loving mother, whose life revolved around caring for her children. Friends and family describe her as fiercely protective, nurturing, and full of warmth, leaving a legacy of love and devotion that will never be forgotten.
Ja’Leah and Jaxton were cherished by their school communities as well. Ja’Leah, an eighth-grade student, and Jaxton, a second-grader, were known for their bright spirits and the joy they brought to those around them. Randolph County Schools confirmed the loss and assured that counseling and support services would be available to students and staff struggling to cope with the tragedy.
The suspected driver, Goddard, along with a passenger believed to be her daughter, were both injured and hospitalized. Their current conditions have not been publicly released, and authorities have yet to confirm if charges will be filed.
As the investigation continues, friends, family, and community members are grappling with profound grief while seeking accountability for what many are calling a preventable tragedy. The loss of Bernedine Spann and her children has left an irreplaceable void, and the community continues to rally around James Spann during this unimaginably difficult time.
This heartbreaking event serves as a solemn reminder of life’s fragility and the lasting impact of love, family, and community. The memories of Bernedine, Ja’Leah, and Jaxton will endure in the hearts of all who knew them, as their lives, though tragically cut short, touched countless others.
